What is Stevia?

Stevia rebaudiana, is a small shrubby member of the Chrysantheum family, native to portions of Paraguay and Brazil. For several hundred years, Stevia leaves have been safely included in the diet of the natives to this region. It is widely used for over 30 years in countires such as South America, China, Japan and in many other parts of the world. Stevioside are composed of glucose, sophorose and steviol.

Major multinational food companies like Coca Cola and Beatrice foods, use stevia extracts to enhance flavor in foods for sale in Japan, Brazil, and other countries.

The Chinese scientist Tei-fu-chen perfected the extraction of stevia in the 1950s. He applied a non-chemical extraction method that had been recorded in the herbal manuscripts of the Chinese emperors. This method which is still the principle technique used this day, removes the green colour and the bitter aftertaste of the Stevia leaves.

Can Stevia be used by Diabetics?

Diabetes is a medical condition that should be monitored and treated by a qualified physician or health care practitioner. However, stevia can be part of a healthy diet for anyone with blood sugar problems, since it does not raise blood sugar levels. Studies suggest that Stevia has a regulating effect on the pancreas and could help stabilize blood sugar levels in the body, therefore making it wise for people with diabetes, hypoglycemia, and Candidiasis.
